Marjory Stoneman Douglas girls soccer had a historic season, but it came to an end following their loss to Cypress Bay High School in the State Semifinals Friday night.
According to Max Preps, Cypress Bay is currently ranked as the sixth-best team in the country and came into this game with a perfect 7-0 record, allowing only five goals all season.
That didn’t stop the Eagles from giving it all they had, as Layla Segelnick scored a goal in the first half to tie the game at one point.
MSD had a chance to take a 2-1 lead throughout the game, but Cypress Bay responded in the second half with a goal to move on to the Championship Game.
This was MSD’s first trip to States in ten years as the Eagles finished off their season at 9-3. That includes them winning the Districts as well as Regionals in a year impacted by COVID-19.
“I could not be more proud of this team for the hard work they put in this year and what they accomplished together as an Eagle family,” said Head Coach Laura Rountree. “It was a pleasure to coach them everyday. They are a very special group of young ladies who I love very much.”
With a handful of seniors set to graduate this spring, they will return a large portion of their team consisting of many talented underclassmen for 2021-22.
