On one of his favorite holidays, family and friends of Walter “Skip” Campbell gathered in Coral Springs Thursday to honor the late mayor with an official street renaming.
A crow of dignitaries, including former and current officials from the city, county, and state, watched as 94th Avenue between Sample Road and Northwest 31st Court was renamed Walter “Skip” Campbell Avenue.
The unveiling of the new street sign was initially scheduled for March 2020, then postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Organizers said that the dedication was purposefully rescheduled for St. Patrick’s Day since it was one of Campbell’s favorite holidays and paid homage to his proud Irish American heritage.
Campbell was elected mayor of Coral Springs in 2014 and held the seat until his sudden passing on October 23, 2018.
“The renaming of this roadway is a tribute to Skip’s legacy and his impact in our city,” said current Coral Springs Mayor Scott Brook. “He was a true pillar of our community and will always be remembered in our hearts.”
The Coral Springs City Commission unanimously voted to rename the stretch of Sample Road for Campbell in 2019.
Thursday’s street renaming ceremony included an Irish breakfast, pipes and drums performance by the Coral Springs 343 Honor Guard, a presentation of colors, and speeches by Campbell’s closest family and friends.
City officials said that the Coral Springs Community Redevelopment Agency paid for the new sign.
A lifelong public servant, Campbell was elected to the Florida Senate in 1996 and spent ten years representing the west and northwest areas of Broward County.
An accomplished legislator, he helped successfully pass 112 bills during his time in the Florida Senate, many of which benefited children and families, the City of Coral Springs said in a press release.
Campbell was also a well-respected attorney. He served as president of the Broward County Bar Association, president of the Broward County Trial Lawyers’ Association, and president of the Federal Bar Association of Broward County.
