A man was arrested and charged with domestic battery and arson after setting his girlfriend’s wig on fire over an argument about text messages.
On February 22, the Coral Springs Police Department received a domestic disturbance call near the 7800 block of NW 39th Terrance from a victim who reported that her live-in boyfriend, later identified as Antwan Maurice Clay, 30, of Coral Springs, had assaulted her and set fire to her belongings.
According to the police report, the victim told officers Clay returned home and began a verbal dispute with her over messages between her and another individual.
The victim told police at one point Clay then grabbed her wig and used a lighter to burn it. Officers would later find the half-burnt wig on the ground outside of the residence.
The report shows the incident escalated to the point where the police were called after Antwan grabbed the victim’s purse and pulled it from her left shoulder, causing the purse to break and the victim to sustain a left shoulder injury.
The victim stated after her injury, Clay threatened to burn her clothes and continued to be the primary aggressor in the situation until officers arrived.
Upon questioning, Clay provided only a vague sequence of events to officers and left out important details. He did, however, admit to burning the victim’s wig, saying he could do so because “he paid for it.”
Clay was placed under arrest by Coral Springs police officers and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
