The Coral Springs Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee on Wednesday awarded the 2024 MLK Monument Award to Kilwins Coral Springs owner Dan Bruck for his service and contributions to the community.
As owner of the local Kilwins for 22 years, Bruck not only serves hand-crafted chocolates, creamy fudge, and original recipe ice cream at his shop at 2758 N. University Dr. also devotes himself to the community through donations, fundraising initiatives, and employee support, according to the city.
Bruck was honored at a ceremony prior to Wednesday’s Coral Springs City Commission meeting, where members of the Coral Springs MLK Committee presented him with his award.
“All I can say is, I enjoy diversity, I really do,” said Bruck. “I can’t imagine a world where we’re all the same.”
Among his recent contributions, Bruck donated a 22-pound chocolate rabbit to the Kids of Love Foundation – an organization that helps children diagnosed with cancer and other debilitating conditions – where it was raffled to raise funds for children in need. He has also supported the Coral Springs Annual MLK Golf Tournament with raffle baskets that helped raise crucial funds for the MLK Scholarship Fund.
Bruck’s other community support has included organizing an ice cream social for seniors, helping to feed nearly 400 families per week through the Dare to Care program, volunteering at the Faith Center Church, and sponsoring the Daughters of Zion/Women of Destiny, according to the city.
The MLK Monument Award honors local individuals or organizations who embody the ideals of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
“From setting up ice cream socials to volunteering his time at various organizations, Dan demonstrates the best qualities of a true community leader and exudes the same selfless spirit as Martin Luther King, Jr.,” said Coral Springs Commissioner Joshua Simmons, the MLK Committee Liaison. “It’s an absolute honor to select Dan as this year’s MLK Monument Award winner.”
Bruck was selected from a list of four nominees. According to the city, other nominees included Marcus Duncanson, Karla Garcia, and Dr. Mark Gendal.
