A Coral Springs youth football coach is fighting for his life as his family searches for a kidney donor and raises funds to support his ongoing medical care.
Henry Smith, described by his family as a dedicated coach, mentor, and father of five, has battled kidney complications for years. According to information shared by his family, his condition worsened late last year, leading to a hospitalization where doctors determined he needed a kidney transplant.
Smith, a former pastor, is now on life support and experiencing organ failure, according to a public fundraiser created by his wife, Dominique Smith. The family says doctors have recommended transferring him to a specialized hospital capable of providing a higher level of care, but those costs have created a major financial burden.
A GoFundMe campaign launched by the family has raised $7,510 toward an $8,000 goal as of Friday night. The funds are intended to cover transportation to a specialized hospital, temporary housing near the facility, daily expenses for the couple’s five children, and other medical-related travel costs.
In a recent update posted to the fundraiser page, Dominique Smith said her husband continues to receive care from specialists, including frequent wound care visits, and described his recovery as “slow and challenging.”
“This has been emotionally and financially overwhelming for us, but your help has made it possible to keep up with his treatments and daily needs,” she wrote.
The family is also appealing to the public for a potential kidney donor.
According to the fundraiser, compatible blood types include B-positive, B-negative, O-positive, and O-negative. Those interested in learning more about living kidney donation are encouraged to contact Memorial Healthcare System transplant services for screening information.
Smith’s wife said he has served as a role model to many young athletes through his work coaching football.
“Now, he needs us,” she wrote in the fundraiser. “And we need help.”
