Residents that are interested in running for Mayor and missed the last qualifying dates, now have another chance.
Starting at noon on Monday, July 14 – noon on Friday, July 18, Coral Springs residents seeking to become a candidate for Seat #1 for the General Municipal election on November 4, 2014 can now submit qualifying documents during the special supplemental qualification period.
On June 20, both City Commissioner Tom Powers and former Mayor Roy Gold qualified, however, Gold had a change of heart and withdrew his name. Because of a city ordinance that says if a candidate withdrawals from the ballot after qualifying, at least 45 days before an election, a new qualifying period must be reopened. Since Powers has already qualified, he would not have to pay a second qualifying fee.
The ordinance says that any remaining candidate shall not be declared an unopposed candidate unless no additional candidate qualifies for the election during the supplemental qualifying period. Any remaining candidate may continue to accept contributions until he is declared unopposed.
If no one decides to run, and Powers is declared unopposed after the new qualifying period, he will be elected unopposed as the new Mayor of Coral Springs.
