Gallop into Adventure at Spitfire Farm’s Winter Break Equestrian Camps

Saddle up, horse lovers. Spitfire Farm in Coconut Creek is accepting participants for its winter break camp.

The locally beloved equestrian facility’s camps include horsemanship lessons, daily riding, nature walks, arts and crafts, and a new, air-conditioned clubhouse.

The farm’s winter camp will be held from Dec. 26 to Dec. 29 and from Jan. 2 to Jan. 5.

The cost for campers is $330 for the week of camp or $95 per day. “Before care” and “aftercare” are available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The camp offers a 10 percent sibling discount for two or more sibling participants.

Spitfire Farm, which houses about 36 horses on 5 acres, is owned by Ejola and Paul Cook. Paul is in the active reserve in the United States Air Force, and Ejola, a corporate attorney, was once a competitive rider.

Camps are capped at 20 students daily “so that everyone gets a hands-on experience,” said Ejola Cook. She encouraged campers to sign up early as the camps are popular and spots fill quickly.

“It’s an opportunity to connect with animals and nature in the heart of the city,” said Cook. “And yet when you get here, it’s like you’re a world away, like suddenly you’re in the country. It’s a unique opportunity for the city kids who may not get that connection with being on a farm and with animals.”

"They learn responsibility, they learn friendship, they have to learn how to partner up with an animal. We’ve watched their confidence grow as they learn skills with these horses. They learn a lot of life lessons during camp in a safe and supportive environment.”

This year, the farm has several new horses and ponies for children to enjoy, Cook added.

The farm at 4201 Vinkmulder Road is home to horses of various levels and experiences, from rescues to advanced competitors. Children are placed into groups based on their age and skill level.

The facility is one of the few farms in Coconut Creek where horses can be ridden into Tradewinds Park.
