Broward Health Coral Springs recently performed its first surgery using the newly acquired da Vinci 5 Surgical System, marking a major advancement in patient care through robotic-assisted technology.
Audrey Berkowitz, 71, of Boynton Beach, was the hospital’s first patient to undergo surgery using the state-of-the-art system. After being diagnosed with rapidly growing uterine cells, she underwent a total hysterectomy performed by Dr. Zoyla Almeida, an obstetrician-gynecologist with 3,000 robotic-assisted procedures to her name.
“I couldn’t be more pleased with my medical care,” Berkowitz said. “I expected to be in significant pain, but I was up and moving the same day and discharged with minimal discomfort. It’s truly not like the hysterectomies of past generations.”
The da Vinci 5 offers enhanced visualization, improved precision, and force feedback technology, allowing surgeons to feel the pressure they apply to tissue. Its ergonomic design helps reduce surgeon fatigue, and the platform can adapt to future innovations.
“The addition of the da Vinci 5 is an important advancement for Broward Health Coral Springs as we continue to offer the most state-of-the-art technology for our patients,” Almeida said. “The system offers improved visualization and precision, as well as better integration for the surgical team.”
Berkowitz said her recovery was nearly pain-free and required only Tylenol. She was discharged within hours and praised the hospital staff for their attentive care.
“I’ve had three C-sections in my life, and I remember the pain vividly,” she said. “This was completely different. I expected to be out of commission for weeks, but I was ready to return to work the next day.”
Broward Health Coral Springs has also made additional investments to enhance care, including a new 3D stereotactic mammography unit, a newly built medical-surgical and step-down unit, and an upgraded Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
“I would recommend this to anyone,” Berkowitz said. “It’s truly amazing how far medicine has come.”
