Some elementary school students find reading challenging. In classroom settings, they may struggle to focus on reading unless the topic interests them.
Delroy Thompson, a history and civics teacher at Ramblewood Middle School in Coral Springs, sought to deal with this problem. He has written five books for elementary school children.
“I want elementary-age students to develop a love for reading. My books offer adventure, some offer moral teachings, while others provide history lessons,” said Thompson.
An essential goal for Thompson is to engage children while introducing them to important themes of perseverance, discovery, and innovation. His books include Wendy Waddle and the Earthquake Warning, The Hidden Elf Kingdom of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and Alexander the Great! The Boy Who Dreamed Big and Changed the World, The Curious Mind of Garrett Morgan! The Boy Who Saved Millions, and Bella Versus the Backyard Bandits.
He comes up with ideas for his books from his everyday life. Thompson enjoys traveling and thought a story about elves in the Blue Ridge mountains would be interesting. The book on Bella came from the idea of a German shepherd protecting the mangoes in his backyard from raccoons. The story about Wendy came from his own struggles with disabilities. Wendy, the duck, overcame a disability and became a hero.
Thompson uses a wheelchair and is a full-time educator, teaching 6th and 7th graders while continuing to write and inspire. “My efforts prove that obstacles are no match for passion and determination,” he said.
A resident of Coral Springs, Thompson has worked with students for 20 years. He teaches six classes daily and plans a book about the Cuban Missile Crisis for middle school students. He gives credit to alicepublishers.com for working with him to achieve his goals.
