In a bizarre turn of events, a routine traffic stop in Coral Springs transformed into a DUI, indecent exposure, and a physical altercation with police officers.
While on a routine patrol during the early morning of December 29, an officer from the Coral Springs Police Department observed a red Toyota sedan speeding near the 900 block of North University Drive.
Records of the incident reveal the vehicle, later identified as being driven by Rony Genau, 28, of Tamarac, failed to stop at a red light, making a series of turns before being pulled over at 98th Avenue and 6th Court.
Officers detected signs of intoxication in Genau, including slurred speech and red, bloodshot eyes. The situation escalated quickly after he became verbally abusive, hurling racial slurs at the officers.
As an officer returned to his vehicle to perform a field sobriety test, he witnessed Genau attempt to exit the vehicle against the instructions of an additional officer standing next to his car.
According to the report, a struggle ensued, with an officer having to strike him to get him to the ground and under arrest.
During the arrest, Genau resisted handcuffs, leading to an additional strike on his abdomen. Subsequent attempts to place him in the patrol vehicle were met with further resistance, including an instance in which Genao kicked an officer in the face, causing an injury to his cheek.
Upon hearing of the issue, Ruddy Genau, Rony’s father and the vehicle owner, arrived at the scene and took possession of the car.
Rony was then transported to the Coral Springs Police Department for booking, where, due to his resistance, officers had to use force to make Genau sit on a bench, where he continually complained of nausea and needing to use the restroom.
According to the report, officers then escorted Genau to a holding cell to use a restroom and helped him remove his pants so he could sit down and relieve himself. Upon completion, he refused to put his pants back on and instead engaged in inappropriate behavior, swinging his genitals around and making lewd gestures toward female officers.
Following a visit to Broward Health Coral Springs for medical clearance, Genao was allowed to submit to a breath test for alcohol levels. After initially agreeing, he declined, leading to additional charges related to refusal of the test.
Genau was eventually transported to Broward Main Jail.
