Hundreds of community members commemorated freedom with libations and laughs at the Coral Springs Juneteenth Celebration, an indoor event held on Wednesday at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts.
The reimagined event began with a vibrant pre-party featuring food and entertainment. Highlights included a step performance by Divine 9, arts and crafts, and complimentary small bites from local Black-owned restaurants.
The festivities kicked off an all-ages comedy show by Preacher Lawson, best known for his time as a finalist on the 12th season of “America’s Got Talent.”
Juneteenth, or “Freedom Day,” is celebrated annually on June 19 in recognition of the liberation of thousands of enslaved men, women, and children in Galveston, Texas, in 1865, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.
