The Coral Springs Charter boys’ and girls’ bowling teams have a new coach, and J.P. Taravella no longer has a bowling team.
Greg Mason, the long-time bowling coach at Taravella, has moved to Coral Springs Charter School and is looking forward to leading the Panthers to further success.
Most of the bowlers from Taravella’s winning team from last year graduated, and there weren’t enough Taravella students interested in the sport for this year. Because students can easily transfer to schools with strong athletic teams, it is challenging for some programs to survive, according to Mason.
He believes the Charter girls’ team will have a winning season and should qualify for the state championship. “We are in a competitive district with Palm Beach schools, but I believe the girls’ team is strong. Our boys’ team is young,” he said.
Leading members on the Panthers girls’ team include Audrey Gold, Cameron Thiele, and Jasmine Chung. Chyanne Van Winkle, who competed on the Taravella boys’ team last year with the absence of a girls’ team, moved to Charter to continue her bowling career.
“I believe we have a good team, and I am looking forward to competing in the state championships,” said Gold, a senior.
Mason also coaches Taravella softball and said he will continue to coach the Trojans in the spring.
