The Coral Springs City Commission is scheduled to vote Wednesday on the purchase of three new rescue vehicles for the Coral Springs–Parkland Fire Department, a $1.31 million investment officials say is part of a long-term plan to replace aging equipment while controlling costs.
“The new rescue vehicles will replace the city’s three oldest units and are part of our seven-year replacement plan, a key component of our long-term financial forecasting,” Coral Springs-Parkland Fire Chief John Whalen told Coral Springs Talk. “By planning ahead, the city secured a prepayment discount of more than $32,000, generating cost savings while ensuring continuity in public safety operations.
“The vehicles will follow the same proven build the city has successfully used in the past,” Whalen added. “Earlier this year, we evaluated multiple manufacturers and selected the option that offered the lowest cost and fastest build time. This investment reflects our commitment to smart financial planning while ensuring our residents continue to receive the highest level of public safety service.”
Commissioners will consider purchasing the three rescue vehicles – ambulances in which patients are treated and transported to hospitals, among other rescue functions – from Matheny Motor Truck Co. of Ocala through a statewide cooperative purchasing program.
Funding for the purchase is included in the city’s approved capital budget.
According to a city memo, Coral Springs officials evaluated proposals through the bid process and selected Matheny Motor Truck Co. based on cost, build time, and the availability of a local repair center. City staff said the proposal will save the city $75,232 compared with the next lowest bid.
