Dr. Krista Gaie Grant – White Coat Ceremony {Broward Health}
A Coral Springs native and Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School graduate is among the newest physicians beginning residency training at Broward Health as the healthcare system welcomes the largest Graduate Medical Education class in its history.
Dr. Krista Gaie Grant, the daughter of Jamaican immigrants and the first person in her family to graduate from college, received her white coat during Broward Health’s annual Graduate Medical Education White Coat Ceremony. She is one of 141 incoming residents and fellows joining the health system this summer.
The incoming class brings Broward Health’s Graduate Medical Education program to a total of 388 residents and fellows training across 28 residency and fellowship programs, including cardiovascular medicine, emergency medicine, pediatrics and other specialties.
Grant’s journey to medicine was shaped by both personal experience and service. While attending college, she experienced hair loss and, unable to afford wigs, taught herself to make them using online tutorials from her dorm room.
That skill later took on a new purpose during medical school at the University of Florida. While shadowing oncologists and working with pediatric cancer patients at UF Health Shands, Grant learned how significantly hair loss affected many young patients. She began creating and donating wigs for children and young adults undergoing cancer treatment in collaboration with clinical teams.
Grant plans to become a dermatologist and will rotate through Broward Health facilities as part of her residency training.
“The White Coat Ceremony is so special, and I share this incredible moment with my family, friends and fellow residents,” Grant said. “I am honored to be able to embark on the next phase of my healthcare career with Broward Health.”
Broward Health now offers 28 residency and fellowship programs across its hospitals. The system includes 24 Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-accredited residency and fellowship programs, one Commission on Dental Accreditation-accredited oral and maxillofacial surgery program, and three American Society of Health-System Pharmacists-accredited pharmacy residency programs.
Sixteen programs are based at Broward Health North, including new obstetrics and gynecology and pharmacy residency programs launched this year.
Broward Health Medical Center is home to 11 programs, while Broward Health Imperial Point hosts one program.
