Coral Springs families who want their children to play travel soccer will have to pay more.
The Springs Soccer Club has established an agreement with the city for the new soccer team, and participants will have to pay a $400 registration fee to play travel or more competitive soccer. During the August 5 meeting, several residents said they were concerned about having to pay more to allow their children to play soccer at a higher level. They said some families might not be able to afford it.
Recreational sports are very popular in Coral Springs, and many children play in city basketball leagues, soccer, softball, and baseball leagues. The fees for the upcoming seasons have not changed and are still under discussion. Staff will be working with the leagues in the coming months and bring recommendations by January 2027, according to Sayona Khandwalla, spokesperson for Coral Springs.
The fees for a person to participate in Coral Springs recreational athletics generally range from $150 to $200. For example, the basketball club charges a base fee of $150, and the soccer program charges between $155 and $195 depending on age.
The flag football program charges around $200. Recreational league participant fees are part of the sports policy, and they have not been set at this time, according to city information.
Denise Fatigate, president of Coral Springs Youth Soccer, spoke at the meeting and said she is proud of the work the volunteer organization does for the city’s young people.
Fatigate said there needs to be better and more respectful communication between the city parks and recreation department and the volunteers who run the soccer program.
Bob Tacher, a board member of the Coral Springs Basketball Club, said the increase in fees families must pay to have their children play in the recreational league is a problem because many families are facing financial struggles and they will be priced out of the club.
He added that the basketball club is a family, and many young people enjoy playing basketball at the gym and Mullins Park. Tacher said many young adults who grew up playing in the club still want to play in a recreational league.
Colin Thomas, president of Coral Springs Flag Football Club, said the increase in fees to play flag football will be difficult for city families to pay when they have other bills like food, medical care, and housing costs. He said the cost of background checks that volunteers will have to pay for may be a financial challenge.
Members of the commission said they want to attend the next sports league meeting to discuss user fees and other concerns brought forward. Since this meeting will have more than one commission member in attendance, it will be publicly noticed.
A date for the meeting has not been set.
