Seven members of the Coral Springs-Parkland Fire Department are deploying to Venezuela as part of an urban search-and-rescue mission following the devastating earthquakes that struck the country last week, officials said.
The department announced on social media that the Coral Springs personnel are heading to Venezuela as part of Urban Search and Rescue Florida Task Force 2, joining more than 160 first responders from across South Florida to assist in search-and-rescue efforts.
“Please keep them, their families, and all first responders on this mission in your thoughts as they work to help those affected,” the department said in the post.
The Coral Springs deployment comes as international rescue crews continue working through collapsed buildings, aftershocks, damaged infrastructure, and rising casualty counts in Venezuela. Two powerful earthquakes, measured by the U.S. Geological Survey at magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, struck within a minute of each other on June 24 about 100 miles west of Caracas, according to Reuters.
By Monday, Venezuelan officials said at least 1,719 people had been killed, 5,034 injured, and 15,866 left homeless, Reuters reported. Authorities said Venezuela had received support from 30 nations, including more than 3,600 rescue and support workers, 118 search-and-rescue dogs, and roughly 1,000 metric tons of supplies.
The quake zone has remained dangerous for responders. Reuters reported that a 4.6-magnitude aftershock rattled Caracas on Monday while rescue crews searched for survivors for a fifth day. One survivor was pulled from the rubble after 106 hours, a rare rescue as crews worked beyond the period when survival chances typically fall sharply.
Florida Task Force 2 is called out for complex disaster responses across the globe, including earthquakes, collapsed-structure searches, victim extrication, and technical rescue operations.
“With only 3 1/2 hours notice, this nationally recognized group can be on its way with 80 highly trained members and thousands of dollars worth of specialized tools and equipment to a community in need,” the task force’s website states.
City officials have not announced how long the Coral Springs group’s deployment is expected to last.
