Coral Springs High School graduate Max Lazar officially made his MLB debut with the Philadelphia Phillies.
A 2017 graduate, Lazar pitched on Saturday in their game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Despite trailing 11-1, Lazar came in and threw one pitch to retire second basemen Kevin Newman before pitching a scoreless eighth inning. He struck out former All-Star Joc Pederson and also got Josh Bell to ground out and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. to fly out.
“It was great,” Manager Rob Thompson said. “Was not afraid. Didn’t have the shakes at all. Threw strikes. I think the fastball was 94. The breaking stuff was pretty good. I liked what I saw.”
Lazar, who became the 189th Jewish player to compete in the MLB, played two years of high school baseball at Coral Springs and dominated as a two-way player. He went 15-4, with an ERA of .81 and hit .357. Initially set to attend Florida Atlantic University, Lazar was picked by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 11th round in 2017. He pitched in the Brewers organization until 2023 before he signed a minor league deal with the Philadelphia Phillies.
In his professional career, Lazar mainly worked out of the bullpen. He won 14 games, including a pair this year, and 18 career saves before the Phillies called him to the major leagues. The Phillies are in first place in the NL East, eight games ahead of the New York Mets. They will play their series’ final game against the Diamondbacks on Sunday before the Phillies host the Miami Marlins on Tuesday at 6:40 p.m.
