A Coral Springs man was arrested twice in the same week for charges relating to a domestic assault in which he choked his wife over a beer on the same day he was set to enter rehab.
On March 28, the Coral Springs Police Department responded to a residence located near the 8300 block of Royal Palm Boulevard.
According to the police report, officers made contact with the victim, who reported that Jeremiah R. Cruz, 41, of Coral Springs, had put his hands around her neck during an argument over drinking beer. The victim also disclosed that Cruz had been violent with her before and that he had alcohol and drug addiction issues.
The victim told officers she was able to breathe and speak during the incident, but Cruz subsequently kicked a closet door and caused visible damage to the hallway.
The CSPD also received a call from Cruz’s mother, who was not present during the incident but heard both parties screaming at each other over the phone.
The report says another witness arrived on the scene and reported hearing a verbal altercation and called 911.
Both witnesses also confirmed that Cruz did not have a phone or any means of contact and that he was planning to check himself into rehab later that day.
The report shows an officer took photographs and a victim/witness statement from the victim, who had slight redness around her neck but declined medical attention.
While officers attended to the victim, additional officers searched the area for Cruz but failed to locate him.
At around 6:00 p.m., the victim called the CSPD to report that she was worried about Cruz because he had not returned to the residence. During the call, the victim disclosed that Cruz had made suicidal statements, which she had not mentioned earlier.
The report shows that officers again responded to the residence, but Cruz had left again.
At around 7:07 p.m., Cruz was taken into custody by CSPD officers at the incident location. However, due to a possible diabetic episode, Cruz was transported to Broward Health Coral Springs for medical treatment.
Cruz was later transported to the Broward County Main Jail, where he was later released after posting a $500 bond.
Records show on March 31, additional charges were applied to Cruz’s case in response to a pair of restraining order violations that had been in place since 2015.
