A Coral Springs man is accused of using Uber drivers posing as “FBI couriers” in a scam targeting a 77-year-old woman, investigators said.
According to a Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office arrest affidavit, Jimmy Altidor, 34, surrendered to authorities on May 18 after deputies spent nearly two weeks searching for him following a dramatic attempted arrest that ended in a vehicle pursuit, records show.
As Talk Media has extensively covered, detectives have been tracking a growing pattern of fraud in which scammers impersonate bank employees and convince victims that their accounts have been compromised. Victims are then told to withdraw money and hand it over to supposed “couriers” for safekeeping or investigation purposes.
Investigators say Altidor was connected to one such operation involving a 77-year-old woman from Deerfield Beach.
Authorities said Uber alerted detectives on May 5 after the woman instructed one of its drivers to pick up a package containing money and transport it to a man waiting in a Miami parking lot.
Detectives traced the delivery request back to Altidor, according to an arrest report. Investigators said the Uber account used in the transaction contained Altidor’s driver’s license information, though the display name on the account had allegedly been changed multiple times over several months. Deputies also noted the account had arranged trips in several different states.
Detectives set up surveillance at a Domino’s parking lot in Miami before the Uber driver arrived.
According to investigators, the Uber driver parked in the lot, and Altidor exited another vehicle and approached the driver to retrieve the package.
As deputies moved in to arrest him, Altidor allegedly spotted law enforcement and attempted to flee. Investigators said he drove onto a sidewalk, forcing two deputies to jump away to avoid being struck.
Authorities allege Altidor then hit an unmarked patrol vehicle driven by a sergeant and collided with another detective’s vehicle before speeding away.
Deputies pursued him through Miami streets and onto Interstate 95, where investigators said he drove recklessly through heavy traffic at high speeds before escaping.
Authorities later determined Altidor abandoned his vehicle, ran into an apartment complex, and allegedly ordered another Uber ride to leave the area.
Investigators said the victim initially received a phone call from someone posing as a Chase Bank representative, warning her about fraudulent activity involving two of her accounts.
The woman told deputies she was later connected to someone who claimed to work for “JM Associates” and instructed her to withdraw $14,000. When she explained she did not have that amount available, the caller allegedly assured her the FBI was involved and would authorize the withdrawal.
According to investigators, the woman eventually handed over an envelope containing cash to two Uber delivery drivers she mistakenly believed were federal couriers.
She was later instructed to surrender a credit card to another supposed courier at a separate location. Authorities said that the delivery was tied to the Uber driver who later met Altidor in the Domino’s parking lot.
After law enforcement publicly identified Altidor as a suspect, deputies said he turned himself in at a sheriff’s office station in Kendall.
He now faces 11 charges, including organized scheme to defraud, fraudulent use of personal identification information, aggravated battery on law enforcement officers, aggravated assault on law enforcement officers, and aggravated fleeing and eluding, causing property damage.
