Twenty local high school seniors and one Coral Springs resident were recognized Tuesday during the annual scholarship and awards ceremony hosted by the Coral Springs Martin Luther King Jr. Committee at the Coral Springs Museum of Art.
The committee awarded $24,800 in scholarships to financially deserving students who exemplify the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through community service, leadership, peace and efforts to improve the lives of others.
This year’s recipient of the MLK Monument Award was Dr. Mark Gendal, recognized for his dedication to compassionate medical care, extensive pro bono services, and leadership within the community.
“Our scholarship recipients and Dr. Gendal represent the very best of our community through their commitment to service, compassion and uplifting others,” said Coral Springs Commissioner and MLK Committee Liaison Joshua Simmons. “The Coral Springs MLK Committee is proud to honor individuals who carry forward Dr. King’s legacy by creating positive change and inspiring hope for future generations.”
Scholarship recipients included students from several local high schools.
From J.P. Taravella High School: Madelyn Sacks, Juan Barrantes, Dominique Thompson and Skyler Balogh.
From Coral Glades High School: Joshua Andrade, Nissie Cadette and Noelle Brooks.
From Coral Springs High School: McKenzie Drakes, Kamilah Pereira, Mondel Saint Fort, and Bensky Veillard.
From Coral Springs Charter School: William Urena, Natalia Conte, Rowen Aarhus, Gavin Palmer, Nyla Montealegre and Adalid Caballero.
From Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School: Johanna Michaud and Najae Powell, both recipients of the Baptist Health STEM MLK Scholarship, along with Isaiah Hicks.
According to the committee, more than $500,000 in scholarship funding has been awarded to 400 students since the program began in 2002.
Students completed an application process that considered acts of humanity and community service that positively impacted others. Scholarship funds will support recipients during the 2026-27 academic year and will be distributed directly to the educational institutions they attend.
