A Cooper City High School student suffered life-threatening injuries when he was struck by a Tesla driven by a Coral Springs woman Monday morning, authorities said.
Fritznie Jarbeth, 40, was driving a 2022 Tesla Model X eastbound in the 9800 block of Stirling Road, just outside the high school, when the accident happened shortly after 8 a.m., according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
The 16-year-old male student was riding a standup electric scooter when he entered the roadway and began to cross Stirling Road northbound, authorities said. He rode into the path of the Tesla and was struck by the electric car, authorities said.
The student was not in a designated crosswalk as he crossed Stirling Road, according to BSO.
Paramedics took the teen to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. An update on his condition was not available Monday afternoon.
The Tesla driver remained at the scene. According to BSO, neither excessive speed nor impairment are believed to have caused the crash.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating.
