The Forest Glen Middle School Chorus program continues to earn honors.
At the March 6 Music Performance Assessment (MPA) at Dillard Performing Arts High School, the Boys’ Chorus earned straight superior ratings, the highest score possible. The Girls’ Chorus earned excellent ratings, with a superior sight reading, and the Beginning Chorus earned straight superior ratings.
Dr. Anthony Zoeller, director of the chorus program, was pleased with the results and credited the students for their efforts. This was the fourth consecutive year the boys earned straight superiors. There are 156 singers in the total chorus program.
Each choir sang two songs and was evaluated on tonal quality, technical preparation, and musical effect. After singing, they went to a room off-stage and were assessed on sight reading.
According to Zoeller, a positive and caring atmosphere is important to a chorus’s success. “Boys are not always comfortable singing. I have created an environment that allows the students to express themselves.”
Zoeller, who is in his 12th year at Forest Glen, believes it is important to show that he cares about the students, but he also believes in setting high expectations. “I believe successful teaching means setting high standards and providing a high level of support. I want students to feel they belong in the chorus classroom,” he said.
The Boy’s and Girl’s Chorus will perform on May 30 at Disney Springs, and then they will visit EPCOT.
“I think we have to create an environment that allows the students to express themselves. I support them. I care about them and I have high expectations.
They will perform at Disney Springs on May 30 and spend the day at Epcot in Disney World.
