Giffords Florida, the local arm of the gun violence prevention organization led by former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, will hold a rally in Coral Springs Monday as part of a statewide bus tour.

The September 12 rally will feature a press event with speakers from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Cypress Park, 1301 Coral Springs Dr. The scheduled speakers are U.S. Congressman Ted Deutch, Broward County Commissioner Jared Moskowitz, former U.S. Congresswoman Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, and State Rep. Dan Daley, organizers said.

During the bus tour, members of Giffords’ organization hold local meet and greets, visit with grassroots activists, hold rallies, conduct canvassing events with candidates, and put on block parties with free food and activities for kids.

“We’re raising awareness of how every Floridian can take action to make our communities safer from preventable violence,” the organization said in a written announcement. “This event is in partnership with Giffords Gun Owners for Safety, Florida chapter, our coalition of responsible gun owners advocating for lifesaving gun laws. Join us and bring a friend. Take action and get involved in our movement.”

Giffords herself will not be attending the event, organizers said.

The retired politician-turned-activist served in the Arizona legislature from 2000 to 2005 and then in Congress from 2006 to 2012.

On January 8, 2011, at a “Congress On Your Corner” constituent event in Tucson, Giffords was shot in the head by a gunman who killed six people and injured 12 others.

She stepped down from Congress in January 2012 to focus on her recovery. In 2013, after the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut, she co-founded the organization today known as Giffords.
