The J.P. Taravella Marching band earned an overall superior rating at the Florida Bandmasters Association Marching Music Performance Assessment (MPA) at Cypress Bay High School on October 19.
Band Director Jonathan Cooper is proud of the band and said members have worked hard to improve. “We had a big learning curve, but we came around,” he said.
According to Cooper, the band added a third part, “Happiness is a Journey,” and improved the musical performance just before the show.
“We put much effort into our shows but also want to have fun. Band students love music, camaraderie, and the social experience,” said Cooper.
The band is preparing for a Joaquin Garcia High School competition in West Palm Beach on November 9. On November 16, they will participate in the Florida Marching Band Championships at John I. Leonard High School in Greenacres.
The Trojans band has many high-achieving students. Aubrey Kurth, a junior from Coral Springs, has a 4.7 grade point average and plays the mellophone and French horn. She is a brass lieutenant and considers the band a family.
Aubrey Fogle, a sophomore from Coral Springs, plays the oboe and trumpet and has been in the band since her time at Ramblewood Middle School. She has a 4.7 GPA and loves to hang out with her band friends.
Anthony Laguna, a senior from Tamarac, is captain of the percussion section and enjoys the band’s family atmosphere.
