In February, the J.P. Taravella Navy JROTC program earned second place out of 30 teams in the unarmed regulation drill competition at the University of South Florida.
According to command master chief Dakota Einzig, an NJROTC leader, the Trojans have worked hard to master various drill techniques and become proficient.
The program has been doing well in other areas. On February 22, the NJROTC earned third place in an orienteering program at Oleta State Park in Miami-Dade, where they also participated in navigation tasks. According to Einzig, the cadets earned first place in a Brain Brawl event in Boca Raton.
Now, the NJROTC offers a dual enrollment program with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Cadets can take courses on the principles of aeronautical science and unmanned aerial vehicles. Next year, according to Lt. Commander Kevin Follett (retired), senior naval science instructor, NJROTC will offer a pilot ground school that the FAA will recognize.
“We teach leadership and have a physical training program,” said Follett.
On Saturday, April 26, the NJROTC will host a drone competition at Taravella.
