A Coral Springs man charged with domestic battery after his wife was found dead in a canal near their home was ordered by a Broward judge Thursday to continue wearing an ankle GPS monitor while he awaits trial, according to court records.
Jeffrey Ernest Evans II, 43, who remains under investigation in the mysterious Aug. 25 death of his 38-year-old wife, Jessica Lloyd, had asked Broward Circuit Court Judge Chris Brown to remove him from a pre-trial electronic monitoring program that mandates his wearing the ankle device around the clock, according to court filings.
Brown denied Evans’ request Thursday, ordering him to remain in the GPS monitoring program. He also ordered that Evans have no contact with any of his dead wife’s relatives nor any prosecution witnesses, the records show.
Authorities received multiple 911 calls about Lloyd the night of her death, including one from a neighbor who reported hearing her screaming that her husband was trying to kill her near their home at 9901 Northwest 15th Ct. Authorities have not said what caused Lloyd’s death.
Before Brown’s ruling, Lloyd’s mother, sister, two close friends, and Evans’ ex-wife filed a document with the court opposing the removal of Evans’ ankle monitor.
They alleged in the filing that they had “witnessed the persistently violent and abusive behavior of the defendant during Jessica’s life.”
They also alleged that Lloyd, who worked as a nurse, suffered four broken ribs and bruises during her marriage to Evans, whom they called a “serial violent abuser.” Evans had socially isolated Lloyd, took her earnings, and “had Jessica perform in uncharacteristic sex acts,” the filing alleged.
“This court is in the unique position where if it desired to go back in time and ask Jessica who killed her, it would have an answer: her husband … Jeffrey Evans,” the group wrote.
They also said Evans “played a non-trivial and unlawful role” in Lloyd’s death, adding that they feared for their lives from potential “retribution” by Evans.
Evans, formerly a lieutenant with Davie Fire Rescue, has pleaded not guilty in the domestic violence case and is currently free from jail on a $1,000 bond.
As part of his pretrial release agreement, he’s required to remain in his home 24 hours a day unless otherwise approved by the Broward Sheriff’s Office Division of Pretrial Services staff.
Coral Springs Police are investigating Lloyd’s death and have not provided any recent updates on the case.
Lloyd’s death followed a domestic incident with Evans, her husband of 17 months, police said.
Authorities found Lloyd naked and face down in the water a short time after the domestic incident and rushed her to Broward Health Medical Center, where doctors pronounced her dead, according to court records.
Evans had previously been accused of domestic violence in unrelated cases, but was not convicted.
Anyone with information about Lloyd’s death is asked to contact CSPD Detective Jessica Girard at JGirard@coralsprings.gov.
