A former Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) treasurer at Imagine Charter School in Coral Springs was arrested for allegedly stealing more than $44,000 from the organization over a nearly three-year period, according to police.
Detectives allege that Rebecca Sanon, 51, of Tamarac, ripped off the school’s PTO by using its bank account and debit card for personal expenses between October 2021 and September 2024.
Sanon was charged with second-degree grand theft and jailed before being released on a $20,000 bond Thursday, records show.
The police investigation began after PTO board members discovered a major shortfall in the organization’s Wells Fargo account while preparing for an event on July 27, 2024, according to a police report. Expecting a much higher balance, the board found only about $1,000 remaining.
A review of financial records revealed that around $17,000 was missing, authorities said. Further investigation by Coral Springs Police later determined the total losses amounted to $44,072.51
According to the police report, Sanon allegedly made 183 unauthorized transactions, including ATM withdrawals, debit card purchases, Zelle transfers, and payments to vendors. Transactions were recorded at stores and services such as Walmart, Publix, Sam’s Club, Uber, and various restaurants.
Surveillance images reportedly show Sanon making multiple unauthorized ATM withdrawals, some of which were confirmed by receipts reviewed by PTO officials, police said.
Detectives subpoenaed records from Wells Fargo, Uber, Florida Power & Light, and Google, which they say linked the fraudulent transactions to Sanon’s personal email address, phone number, and home address. One payment from the PTO’s account allegedly went directly to Sanon’s electric bill at her Tamarac apartment, police said.
During an interview with detectives on January 21, 2025, Sanon reportedly admitted to using the PTO debit card for personal expenses, including rent and an Uber ride after a car accident, the police report states. She told investigators she had been struggling financially and used funds to avoid eviction, police said.
Police said Sanon also received Zelle payments intended for PTO events such as the school’s Fall Festival and Winterfest, which she told investigators were placed into petty cash — funds the board later found to be missing as well.
PTO board members told police that since Sanon’s removal from the organization’s bank account in mid-2024, no further irregularities have been discovered, the police report states.
