According to Rod Sasse, executive vice president of Imagine Schools, Anthony Moore has earned the respect of his colleagues.
A music teacher and band director at Imagine Charter School at Broward K-8, Moore was voted Teacher of the Year by its educators. He was among three candidates nominated.
While he was proud to receive the award, he believes other colleagues are equally deserving. “There are so many people who work so hard at Imagine every day. I have passion and dedication to my students and the music program,” he said.
When Moore arrived at the Coral Springs school nine years ago, there was a small music program. Moore, a professional musician who taught private students, obtained various instruments from friends and raised money through pizza sales, concerts, and donations.
During his first year, he took 6th through 8th-grade students to district solo and ensemble competitions so they could experience performing an individual song in front of an adjudicator. Then, he began taking students to concerts, music performance assessments, and other local events.
Moore is passionate about teaching music and wants to help children learn. “Through music, kids can learn a methodology that will help them in ways that regular academics can’t. Music is a universal language,” he added.
Moore continued the program during the pandemic by offering private online lessons for all students. Now, Imagine includes a complete music program. The most advanced students in grades 6-8 participate in the symphonic band. Those in grades K-2 learn the fundamentals of music through chanting and singing with positive messaging. Kids in grades 3-5 practice singing, reading music, and playing recorders.
“I want to keep building the program and watching the children grow,” said Moore.
Imagine Charter School Principal Debra Darling loves working with Moore. Her son Bladen was a trombone player in the band and loved the experience.
She was very impressed by Moore’s efforts during the pandemic through Zoom classes to help all the students practice music.
“He would work every night to give the students lessons. He is an inspiration and gets the students to commit to music.”
