The J.P. Taravella High School marching band has a new director.
Shamar Drumond has taken over the leadership of the Marching Trojans and is working to rebuild the 69-member band. He comes from Miami-Dade County, where he taught music to elementary school students.
“It has been my goal to lead a high school band program, and I believe Taravella is a great band. I believe discipline is important, but I also want the students to have a fun experience,” said Drumond.
Many students join high school marching bands because they enjoy practicing and performing music. They also love the family atmosphere and lifelong friendships made in the band, according to Drumond. “We have a nice band culture at Taravella, and the kids are very dedicated. I want to grow the program,” he said.
Percussion director John Stafford believes in Drumond’s leadership and said the band is performing well.
Matis Basha, the drum major and a trombone player, said Drumond is a good director and students want to be a part of the program.
