Coral Springs Police have arrested a woman months after a high-speed crash in Pompano Beach that seriously injured a passenger and caused significant damage to a business.
According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, Jysell Lugo, 26, of Fort Lauderdale, was driving northbound on the 1300 block of North Federal Highway around on November 2 when she lost control of the vehicle, veered off the road, and crashed into Brandy’s Shoes, a business located at 1290 North Federal Highway.
Deputies arrived to find the SUV’s front end lodged inside the building, its glass shattered, and airbags deployed throughout the vehicle. Lugo’s passenger was discovered lying on the ground outside the SUV, while Lugo was found trapped in the driver’s seat. Due to the damage, the driver’s side door was jammed, law enforcement was forced to pull her from the vehicle through the passenger side to administer medical aid.
First responders noted that Lugo had red, glassy eyes and a strong smell of alcohol on her breath. When asked by paramedics if she had consumed any alcohol, she reportedly responded, “Yes.” Two open containers of the alcoholic beverage “Truly” were later found on the driver’s side floorboard.
Both Lugo and her passenger were transported to Broward Health North. The passenger was found to be unconscious and had suffered a serious head injury, several missing teeth, and three fractures to his spine, according to hospital staff.
Deputies attempted to interview Lugo at the hospital, but she was sedated due to her lack of cooperation with medical procedures. A medical blood draw conducted before law enforcement arrived revealed her blood alcohol level was 0.207—more than twice the legal limit. A toxicology report later showed the presence of several substances in her system, including THC, cocaine, alprazolam, and alcohol.
On May 1, Lugo was taken into custody by officers from the Coral Springs Police Department and charged with multiple counts, including DUI causing serious bodily injury and DUI causing property damage.Â
Lugo is currently being held in the Broward County Main Jail without bond.
