Coral Springs had four varsity teams in baseball and softball compete in their first Regional playoff game this week.
Coming off a Big-8 and District Championship, the Coral Springs Chater softball team came in as the top seed and beat LaSalle High School 15-0.
The Panthers jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first inning, with Cam Thiele recording two hits and four RBIs. Kayleigh Cuccia also had a two-run triple, with Jessie Sacca, Stephanie Basso, and Kate Maston all driving in runs.
CSC scored six more in the bottom half, with Bree Martinelli, Jazzy Chung, and Jordan Shurpin coming off the bench and combining to drive in four. Courtney Wahlbrink and Gia Schirripa did not allow a hit and struck out seven in the three-inning game. Next, CSC will play Westminster Christian Academy on Tuesday, May 14, at 7 p.m.
The Coral Springs Charter baseball team recorded a dramatic come-from-behind 4-3 win over Monteverde Academy. The Panthers took a 2-0 lead following RBIs from Jack Grasso and Jackson Taylor. CSC allowed the subsequent three runs but came back and scored two in the bottom of the seventh to walk it off.
Nick Milosevich walked and stole second base before coming around to score the tying run on a base from Yaddison Karaliesghar. He stole two bases and scored the winning run after an RBI single from Andrew Raucci.
Dylan Applebaum started and recorded eight outs, three of which came via strikeout. Ethan Saaverda got the next two outs before Marcelo Young won after 3.2 innings with five punchouts. The Panthers went on to play North Broward Prep in the Regional Semifinals but lost 6-3 despite two RBIs from Taylor. Raucci, Ethan Saavedra, Dylan Applebaum, Grasso, Shane Scala, Nick Campbell. Brady Shimek, Vincent Toloza, and Dylan Stolov are all set to graduate. Grasso and Applebaum are both set to play in college at Weber International University and Hudson Valley Community College, respectively.
After going 15-11 in the regular season against one of the most demanding schedules in Broward County, J.P. Taravella lost in their first game in Districts 6-0 against Western. Still, JPT qualified and faced second-seeded West Broward in their opening Regional Game but fell 10-0 despite six hits. JC Martinez finished with two, while E.J. Burns, Anthony Quigley, Jake Miller, and Peyton Morgan had one.
Quigley finished the season with a team-high three home runs. Martinez had to, while Jonny Lopez recorded one. Lopez also led the team in hitting, with Quigley and Burns hitting over .300. On the mound, Burns and Anthony Tizol had four wins, with Javier Miranda picking up two. The Trojans will have five players graduate: Burns, Quigley, A.J. Perry, Javier Miranda, and James Lacey before the Trojans begin a new season in 2025.
The Coral Glades softball team made a run to the District final before falling against Western High School 8-0 in Regionals. Brianna Escobar recorded two hits, while Carmela Smith had one. Hayleigh Thomas, who threw a no-hitter against Marjory Stoneman Douglas in the District Tournament, pitched a complete game and struck out six. Coral Glades finished the season 12-11-1 and will have seniors Smith, Casie Kazanjian, and Alyssa Densmore all set to graduate.
Smith finished the season as the leading hitter, batting .394. Escobar hit .382, while Dilynn Soto, Cameron Marques, Sabrina Farrugia, and Douge hit over .300. Densmore and Escobar each hit home runs, while six Jaguars had at least 10 RBIs. Thomas finished the season with a team-high five wins on the mound. Addison Schwartzberg added four victories, while Elisa Salas won twice.
