High School sports in Coral Springs wrapped up with dozens of players receiving prestigious awards.
Coral Springs Charter
Courtney Wahlbrink of the Coral Springs Charter softball team was named Player of the Year. She pitched in 151 innings and had a 25-3 record with a .46 era. Juhnyee See was also a Player of the Year from the girls tennis team. She finished the year 10-1 at No. 1 singles and 15-0 with partner Madisen Clark winning overall championships in both.
The softball team also had Stephanie Basso named to the First Team All-County. The Coastal Carolina signee hit .338 with five home runs and 13 extra-base hits. Giovanni Gurgel was also selected and batted .429 with 47 RBIs. Addi Michel hit .412 and scored 37 runs, while Jessie Sacca batted .481 with five triples and a home run. Kate Maston and Cameron Thiel were named to the Second Team, and Kayleigh Cuccia, Heather Robertson, and Alivia Taibl were Honorable Mentions. Former CSC softball star Emily Estroff won Coach of the Year at Cardinal Gibbons High School.
The baseball team had Jack Grasso and Ethan Saavedra picked as Honorable Mentions. In track and field, Adrianna Harris was picked to the First Team for shot put and discus. She won a District Title and then finished second in Regionals before going on to State. Hannah Manger was also picked to set the school record in the pole vault, while Trinity Dorvil, Sarah Manigat, Kendall Parrott, Lily Richardson, and Frankie Schirripa were Honorable Mentions. Beylian DeJesus and Preston Griffin were Honorable Mentions from the boys team.
In tennis, See and Clark were named to the First Team in doubles. After her incredible season, Clark was also selected to the Second Team in singles. The volleyball team also had Aadhith Aranhcherry, Jalen McGregor, and Sergio Monnar as Honorable Mentions.
Coral Glades
Jack Kollwitz from the Coral Glades baseball team was picked to be on the first team. A Mississippi Valley State University signee, he hit .517 and had five extra-base hits. Aydan Gonzalez made the Second Team, while Kyle Fernandes and Jason Lincoln were Honorable Mentions.
Softball star Carmela Smith was named to the First Team after hitting .394 with nine extra-base hits. Briana Escobar, Cameron Marques, and Dominique Soto were Honorable Mentions for a team that made Regionals.
Briana Brown and Allura Buelvas were Honorable Mentions on the girls lacrosse team. Evi Andreoni, Rhimaya Jiro, and Noel Thomas were selected from the girls’ flag football team, while Coral Glades’ Jordan Blaise, Jamar James, and Devin Roman were Honorable Mentions on the track and field team.
Coral Springs High School
Coral Springs High School named Mark Saintelus on the first team for volleyball. He led the Colts to 17 wins and a school-record 223 blocks. Joel Jobi made the Second Team, while John Decelestino was an Honorable Mention.
Sebastian Marrero was selected to the second team in the 400 hurdles. Jeffrey Belizaire, Zanu Fullerton, Benjamin Joseph, Sebastian Marrero, and Cashmere Samuels were Honorable Mentions from the boys’ track and field team, and Shaquille Alvaranga, Za’coria Anestal, Trinity Dajuste, and Olivia Higgins were picked from the girls’ teams. The Colts also had Andrew Allison and Ruben Zuany named Honorable Mentions from the baseball team.
J.P. Taravella
J.P. Taravella had Florida Gulf Coast signee EJ Burns from the baseball team named to the Second Team. Ajah Arscott of the track and field team was named the second team, along with Qyrah Spann-Pierre, T’Yquez Jenkins, Maleek Lubin, and Wadleigh Valmyr, all Honorable Mentions.
Coral Springs also had several other student-athletes win awards, including siblings McKenzie Jewell and Jaxson Jewell. McKenzie attended Pompano Beach High School and became the ninth player in Florida State Junior College history to be named to the FCSAA All-State Second Team after her freshman year.
She was also named to the NCJAA D1 All-Tournament Team, NCJAA D1 All-FCSAA Second Team, and NCJAA D1 All-Citrus Conference First Team after finishing the season hitting .394 with four home runs and 49 RBIs. She also had 17 doubles, three triples, and 117 total bases. Her team went 4-025 and won three games in the FCSAA Division I Softball Championship.
“Adjusting to college softball was definitely different as we had three times the amount of games compared to high school softball, Jewell said. “I felt very happy and excited to be recognized because it made me feel that all the hard work I’ve been doing and continue to do is paying off.”
Jaxson is a junior at Deerfield Beach High School and the starting quarterback for the varsity football team. Like his sister, he also played on their basketball team and completed an incredible year in track and field to be named an Honorable Mention. He went on to win a District Championship in the 400 meters and 4 x 400 meters. He also finished sixth in the 200 meters and placed in the top ten in two events at the State Championship.
“It’s definitely been a packed year for me and sports,” Jaxson said. “I really haven’t had any breaks because, after each season, I’m on to the next with practices.”
