Coral Springs’ own Jaxson Jewell is set to start as quarterback for Deerfield Beach in the 2023 football season under the guidance of former Coral Glades Head Coach Cam Thomas.
Jaxson, whose older sister McKenzie Jewell recently signed to play college softball at Eastern Florida State College, is entering his junior year with the Bucks and his second year on the varsity team after Deerfield had only three wins a season ago. He is also a basketball player and says the long history of success is a reason why he wanted to attend Deerfield Beach. Jaxson has been putting in a ton of work to prepare for the upcoming season.
“I’ve been working with two of my quarterback coaches tweaking things in my mechanics and footwork so I can be throwing the ball to the best of my ability this season,” Jaxson said. “I’ve also been working on getting bigger, faster, and stronger working with a personal trainer doing lifting, core, and mobility work.”
Jaxson has lived in Coral Springs’ Butler Farms for two years and attended several camps this summer, including the Manning Passing Academy, where Peyton and Eli Manning were with over 40 of the top starting college quarterbacks. Boston College quarterback Emmett Morehead was his group counselor and worked with Peyton during his first drill. Jaxson is eager to get better, has attributions of playing in college football, and loves the new coaching staff led by Thomas.
“He’s really trying to change [the school] back to the old Deerfield culture-wise and on the field,” Jaxson added. “He’s countlessly reminding us of the legends that came out of Deerfield Beach and how each and every one of us can be just like them.”
Thomas continues to focus on getting his team prepared and knows the impact his quarterback can have on the rest of the team.
“Jaxson brings leadership and a hard hat mentality to our program,” Thomas said. “He has a lot to prove to everybody in the county and South Florida. We will only go as far as his legs and arm take us.”
Deerfield Beach is set to play against Dillard on August 17 in the Kickoff Classic. They will then open the regular season against Fort Lauderdale High School before Thomas returns to Coral Glades for a matchup against the Jaguars on September 1.
