Coral Springs city commissioners on Wednesday unanimously approved a contract for up to $1.2 million in technology upgrades, aiming to bolster the city’s online operations and cybersecurity.
The funding, approved under an existing capital budget and not from new expenditures, allows the city to buy desktops, laptops, servers, printers, and storage systems under a cooperative purchasing agreement through the National Association of State Procurement Officials.
The contract runs from August 6, 2025, to June 30, 2026, and includes major vendors such as Dell and Hewlett-Packard, according to city documents.
Commissioner Joshua Simmons underscored the stakes of cybersecurity investment, likening it to funding for police and fire services.
“Cybersecurity is one of the new fronts of attack,” he said. “Nobody in Coral Springs wants to wake up one day and see a headline that we’ve been locked out of our systems and are being ransomed for $30 million.”
“This equipment ensures that our institution is secure and fights against all the bad things that folks do to municipal communities,” said Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen, who fielded phone calls from residents concerned about the expenditure.
“I really want to assure the public that we are being fiscally responsible,” she said.
As technology ages, it often loses the capacity to receive critical security updates, city officials noted. To ensure the city stays protected, devices are replaced on a five-year schedule, supported by a dedicated computer replacement fund, officials said.
Commissioners were careful to clarify that the $1.2 million figure represents the maximum authorized expenditure — not an upfront outlay — and that the city historically spends less than the approved amount due to negotiated discounts and cost-conscious planning.
City leadership also pointed to data it said shows Coral Springs consistently spends less on IT comparable to other local governments.
