Coral Springs tennis player Skyelyn Johnson has officially reached the quarterfinals of the Sports Illustrated Athlete of the Year Scholarship Contest.
This competition not only recognizes student athletes for their success on the field, but also raises money for cancer research and the Why Not Foundation. The winner will receive $25,000 scholarship and a two-page highlight spread in Sports Illustrated.
The rising star currently sits in second place and says playing tennis makes her happy and teaches her so much.
“As an individual sport, it helps me in so many areas of my life by teaching me how to be an independent and quick thinker, but also forces me out of my shell to meet some pretty amazing tennis players around the country, Johnson said.
Johnson’s favorite tennis players are Coco Gauff, Emma Raducanu, and Serena Williams. She trains seven days a week and recently overcame a significant ankle injury. After four long weeks off the court, Johnson started physical therapy and recently won a 16u match at the age of 12.
“Tennis is really a powerful and pretty hard sport; it’s not just about hitting shots over the net, it’s about having precision and placement and working through tough moments, and trusting yourself,” Johnson added.
Voting is open daily with one free vote per day. One can also donate to the cancer research fundraiser for extra votes. Johnson has already advanced through two rounds of voting, and voting will end on September 18.
