The Veterans Coalition of Coral Springs will sponsor The Moving Wall, a tribute to veterans, fallen service members, and missing service members from the Vietnam War, on May 5 through May 7, at Sportsplex Park.
The Moving Wall is a half-size replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., that has been touring the country for over 30 years.
It last came to Coral Springs in 2015.
Army Veteran John Devitt founded The Moving Wall in 1984 after visiting the memorial in D.C. as a way to share his experience and everybody else’s experiences in Vietnam with those who could not go to D.C.
According to Lynne Martzall, communications director for the City of Coral Springs, in 2022, the city commission agreed to budget $10,000 to support the Veterans Coalition in bringing the wall to Coral Springs.
The coalition is actively hosting fundraisers to cover additional costs.
The funding request for The Moving Wall came from former Commissioner Lou Cimiglia, who passed away in 2022.
“Veterans are such an important part of our nation’s history,” said Mayor Scott Brook. “Just like our Hometown Heroes banner program, Coffee with a Veteran meetup, and regular military recognitions, the arrival of The Moving Wall will serve not only as a valuable tool to educate the community but also as a signal that Coral Springs greatly appreciates those who serve and served our nation.”
The city commission recently proclaimed March 29 as National Vietnam War Veterans Day at their March 15 meeting, surrounded by members of the Veterans Coalition and Vietnam War veterans.
Veterans Coalition president Tony Bianco expressed gratitude for the city’s recognition.
“We love [this proclamation] because it’s been so many years since Vietnam veterans have been recognized,” he said.
