It has been quite the week for the Coral Springs Charter softball team, winning both the Big-8 and District Championship.
The Panthers went 3-0 in their games in the Big-8 with victories over Cypress Bay, Western, and St. Thomas Aquinas High School to move to 21-0-2 before starting the District Playoffs.
In the first two games, CSC outscored their opponents 26-0. Heather Robertson drove in seven runs while Julia Estroff knocked in five, with Sophia Bertorelli and Courtney Wahlbrink shining on the mound before defeating Western in the final.
“It’s a lot to ask of your pitchers to throw three nights in a row,” Head Coach Mark Montimurro said. “Western has a potent offense. We expected a battle tonight after handling them earlier in the season. The team has shown a lot of moxy since we stepped on the field in January. Lots of fight in all of them.”
CSC got off to a slow start in the final and fell behind 4-1 heading into the seventh inning. Stephanie Basso cut the deficit to one with a two-run home run before Jessica Sacca tied the game with an RBI single.
After Sophia kept Western off the board in the top of the eight, Basso recorded the walk-off hit, scoring Estroff with the winning run on April 27.
“I am really excited for our team,” Basso said. “We never gave up against a really good team that got on us early, and from start to finish, we had each other’s back and just kept trying to push for one.”
CSC then played in the District Championship game against Cardinal Gibbons on Wednesday and was no-hitting the Panthers through the first five innings. However, Bella Bertorelli broke it up and came around to score on a safety squeeze from Sacca to start an eight-run inning.
Michel also laid down a perfect bunt to plate another run before CSC opened it, highlighted by a two-run double from Robertson. Basso, Estroff, Kate Maston and Bella also knocked in runs.
Sophia pitched a complete game shutout, striking out 12 after recording her 300th career strikeout this season. She is 18-0 this year and has an ERA of .51. Next, CSC will be the top seed in the Region and play Ramson Everglades in the Quartefinals on Wednesday 1t 7 p.m. The winner of this game will face either Westminster Christian or American Heritage, while Somerset Academy, Keys Gate, Sports Leadership and Management, and Kings Academy are also in their Region.
