Quick action by Walgreens employees may have prevented a violent attack after police say a man yelling racial slurs followed a woman into the store’s parking lot, threatened to kill her, and tried multiple times to force her car door open.
According to a Coral Springs Police Department arrest affidavit, the incident occurred on the night of July 12 at the Walgreens located at 11750 West Sample Road. The victim, who was working as an Instacart shopper, told investigators she noticed a vehicle swerve in front of her while she was driving south on Coral Ridge Drive.
When she pulled into the Walgreens lot to fulfill an order, the same car followed her in. A man, later identified by police as Troy Laflam, 52, of Coral Springs, allegedly got out of the suspicious vehicle and walked toward the victim’s car before allegedly pulling on her driver’s side door multiple times, partially opening it while threatening to kill her and hurling racial slurs.
The woman fought to keep the door shut as Laflam reportedly struck her window with his hands and tried to reach inside. That’s when Walgreens employees stepped in, according to the report.
One employee, who was sitting in his car at the time, witnessed what he described as a “chase” ending in the parking lot and saw Laflam trying to force the door open.
Another employee, hearing the commotion from inside, ran outside and confronted Laflam. The Walgreens employees’ presence and intervention deterred Laflam from furthering his assault, allowing the victim to escape unharmed, according to the report.
Police say the woman managed to take a photo of his license plate, which led investigators to Laflam. Surveillance footage from Walgreens also provided both confirmations of the series of events described and tips that led to Laflam’s eventual arrest.
Laflam was arrested and charged with burglary with assault. He was transported to the Broward County Main Jail and later released after posting $5,000 bond.
