A woman was arrested for brutally beating another woman in Coral Springs Tuesday during an assault on the Sawgrass Expressway, knocking loose all of her bottom teeth before hiding from police in a highway drain, police records state.
The victim was driving north on the Sawgrass around 3:40 a.m. in the 8000 block of the expressway near mile marker 16 when Neyna Paishann Rhodes, 39, of West Palm Beach, appeared suddenly in the roadway and forced the victim to swerve to avoid hitting her, according to an arrest affidavit filed by Coral Springs Police.
The victim crashed her vehicle into a metal barrier in the highway median. When the vehicle stopped, Rhodes forced her way inside on the passenger side and clawed at the victim’s face, tried to gouge her right eye, and put her whole hand in the victim’s mouth, the affidavit states.
Coral Springs Talk is withholding the victim’s name because she is not accused of any wrongdoing.
The woman said she defended herself by striking Rhodes with her hands across her face before Rhodes fled. Rhodes left behind a green balaclava, which the victim said fell off inside the vehicle during the attack, according to police.
The victim called police as she watched Rhodes run southbound on the Sawgrass toward the North University Drive exit, the affidavit states.
During a canvass of the area police found Rhodes hiding inside a drain about 100 yards from the scene of the crash, police said. Her purse – containing methamphetamine and cannabis – was also found in the roadway near the victim’s vehicle, according to the report.
The victim suffered cuts to her cornea and “complete displacement of her bottom teeth” during the assault, police said. She was taken to Broward Health Medical Center and admitted due to the extent of her injuries.
Records show Rhodes was charged with burglary with assault and possession of methamphetamine and cannabis. Police said they are investigating the criminal case while the Florida Highway Patrol investigates the crash.
Jail and bond information was not immediately available in Rhodes’ case Tuesday morning.
