Jade Brown and Jasiah Clapp of the J.P. Taravella track and field team officially received the first South Florida Speed School scholarship in memory of Nicole Marie Garrish.
This $500 scholarship is awarded to college-bound students who regularly participate in Speed School and demonstrate leadership, selflessness, and integrity during their free clinics for young athletes of all ages, sports, and genders.
Brown is signed to attend the University of Arizona and shined, winning a District Championship in the 100, 200, and 4 x 100-meter relay team. She then finished in the top three in Regionals and set a personal best with a time of 24.36 in the 200 meters to place sixth. The relay finished in third while Brown came in fifth in the 100 meters, .09 seconds away from her personal best.
Clapp recently signed to Barton Community College in Kansas after winning the 800 meters, 4 x 400, and 4 x 800 relay in Districts. He finished in the top five in all three events in Regianls and also ran in States, with his best finish coming in the 4 x 400 relay.
“I like that the award is going to speed school participants and regulars for someone that is there constantly,” Coach John Garrish said.
