As there is a need, the largest food bank in South Florida will maintain its presence at a distribution site in Coral Springs.
Going into its third week, Feeding South Florida continues sending volunteers to the north side of Coral Square Mall, where those with vouchers collect bags of nutritious food and essential supplies during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Paula Rubiano, city spokesperson, said the nonprofit group estimates each distribution day provides food for up to 700 families. Still, because of creative inventory and planning, the distribution site feeds up to 900 families at the weekly event.
Rubiano added that City Manager Frank Babinec was grateful the mayor, commissioners, and chiefs from Coral Springs Parkland Fire Department have volunteered en masse to get food to people in need.
“We recognize so many families have experienced a tremendous financial burden due to the COVID-19 crisis. We will continue feeding our community for as long as there is a need,” said Babinec.
In a city commission meeting held via Zoom, Babinec said the process of feeding so many people in partnership with Feeding South Florida took about two-and-a-half hours each Tuesday morning it has taken place.
The next food distribution takes place in Coral Springs on Tuesday, May 5.
