Coral Springs Police took two illegal guns off the streets during separate arrests this month, court records show.
The first bust happened July 1 after officers arrested a man on an outstanding warrant in the 2700 block of Riverside Drive, then turned their attention to the driver of a white, 4-door Infiniti who had just dropped him off, according to an arrest affidavit.
The driver, Hayden Jean-Charles, 21, of Pompano Beach, allegedly had a black Springfield Armory XDM handgun—loaded with 11 rounds of 40-caliber ammunition—inside his vehicle, according to police. He was also in possession of six debit cards in other people’s names and a small amount of marijuana, records show.
The gun in his car was not intended for self-defense, police said.
“It was determined that Hayden was in violation of carrying a concealed firearm, negating the possession in private conveyance exception,” in state law, wrote Coral Springs Police Detective Christopher Wilson.
“He was not carrying the concealed firearm for self-defense or any lawful purpose.”
Police took the gun as evidence but did not book Jean-Charles on a weapons charge. Instead, Wilson wrote, an “affidavit pertaining to unlicensed carrying of a concealed firearm will be submitted to the State Attorney’s office for further review,” meaning prosecutors will decide whether to charge Jean-Charles for the illegal gun.
He was booked into Broward Main Jail on charges of unlawful possession of the personal identification of another and marijuana possession. Records show he was released July 2 on a $1,000 bond.
The second arrest happened July 6 when a man called police to report a gun in an occupied 2007 Toyota Camry parked outside Total Smoke & Vapor, 10337 W. Sample Rd, court records show.
Coral Springs Detective Lauren Lopez responded and saw a man in the driver’s seat brandishing a black firearm, police said. When the man noticed her, he allegedly placed the gun on the floorboard under the driver’s seat.
Police later identified the man as Alexander Montalvo, 26, of Pembroke Pines.
When police searched his vehicle, they found the pistol: a black Ruger 9 millimeter loaded with 14 rounds, according to an arrest affidavit.
The gun was taken as evidence, and Montalvo booked into Broward Main Jail on a charge of carrying a concealed firearm.
Neither Jean-Charles nor Montalvo could immediately be reached for comment Tuesday.
