The J.P. Taravella girls’ track and field team proudly clinched third place at the regional championship in Miramar on May 2, marking an impressive achievement for the season.
Following the team’s strong showing, Coach Dawn Spann expressed pride in the girls’ team and commended their effort this season. “We had some impressive performances and victories,” Spann said, “and now we are looking forward to the Class 4A state championship this coming Saturday.”
Among the standout performances, Patricia Costa took first place in the 100-meter hurdles at 14.01 seconds, while Olivia Noel earned first place in the long jump with 5.60 meters.
Other notable qualifiers included Rayelle Languedoc, who earned fourth place in the discus with 36.18 meters; Samira Belizaire, who took third place in the triple jump with 11.26 meters; and Camille Camper, who finished third in the javelin with 31.80 meters. All qualified for the state championship.
In addition, the 4X800 relay team proudly set a new school record, earning a third-place finish and qualifying for the state championship in 9.47 minutes. The talented team includes Olivia Noel, Samira Belizaire, Caileen Caneles, and Valentina Castillo.
Qualifying for the state championship with a time of 4.01, the 4×400 relay team finished fifth; Belizaire, Noel, Timya Johnson, and Jocelyn Hart were among the team members. Similarly, the 4×100 relay squad, featuring Johnson, Costa, Tranya Standley, and Rayelle Languedoc, placed fifth with a time of 48.6, thus earning a spot at the state meet, according to Spann.
At the regional meet, the boys’ team found some success as well. The 4X800 team, featuring Joshua Reneau, Scardy Fils, JahRee Pierre, and Craig Dennis, finished fourth and earned a spot at the state meet with a time of 7.56. In addition, Reneau took seventh place in the 400-meter hurdles, qualifying with a time of 55.85.
Spann noted how proud she was of the boys who qualified for the state championship meet and said she would have liked to see even more reach that level.
All of these outstanding athletes will compete at the highly anticipated state championship meet on May 9 at Hodges Stadium on the University of North Florida campus.
