It’s not often the PGA and LPGA tour collide, but Coral Springs native Lexi Thompson had the opportunity to play with two-time Masters Champion Bubba Watson in the QBE shootout on December 10-12 in Naples.
The tournament, which began in 1989, is run by former U.S. Open Champion, Greg Norman where two players compete together in a scramble. While both golfers attempt each shot, the teams use the best ball of the group on each hole.
Despite coming in ninth place in the scramble, Thompson and Watson recorded a -23 under which tied her best score in five tournaments. She achieved that in 2017 when playing with Tony Finau and also finished in fourth place in 2018.

“It was overall amazing,” Thompson said. “I was so happy to be able to team up with (Bubba) this week. This week is so much fun, growing up with older brothers, just playing with the guys and playing from all the way back.”
Thompson, who grew up in Coral Springs and moved to Palm Beach Gardens in 2013, has also competed with Bryson Dechambeau and Sean O’Hair. Still, Watson thought it was incredible what she could do while hitting so far back.
“She played unbelievably, and I couldn’t have asked for a better partner,” Watson said. “She putted phenomenally and had a lot of amazing shots. I couldn’t have asked for a better partner.”
It has been a great year for 26 year old. As the youngest-ever winner of an LPGA tournament nearly a decade ago, Thompson led the U.S. Women’s Open going into the last round at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, California. She also had a chance to compete for Team USA in the Tokyo Olympics for the second time in her career.
Thompson heads into 2022 finishing second in three tournaments and two third-place performances. She is currently the 12th best female player in the world.
