Athletics is full of upsets and unexpected outcomes.
The Coral Springs High School boys’ bowling team achieved a first-place victory at the Broward County Athletic Association championship meet at Bowlero Tamarac on October 8, representing a true underdog victory.
At the start of the bowling season, the Colts lacked enough male bowlers to field a whole team. So, Coach Steve Rocke recruited some bowlers from the school, and they practiced long and hard to improve their skills. In a short time, they became proficient and were the best of twelve Broward teams.
“Our whole team did very well because they were dedicated and really practiced hard,” said coach Steve Rocke.
Team Captain Logan Howe, a junior, was pleased with the victory. During the competition, he shot a 202, 201, and 221. “We recruited some good bowlers who really practiced hard—that is why we won. The entire team did well,” said Howe.
Leading bowlers on the Coral Springs boys team include Noah McCabe, Enrique Soto, Israel Allan, and Jack Tarquinio.
The Marjory Stoneman Douglas team earned third place. Coach Michael Gregory wanted his team to win, but he gave credit to Coral Springs for their victory. He said Bryce Gregory, Dylan Miller, and Angelo Ferriino bowled well in the competition.
The Coral Springs Charter girls’ bowling team won first place at the county tournament. Coach Greg Mason was very pleased with the team’s performance and said that everyone bowled well.
“We won because we worked hard in practice and our girls are very determined,” said Mason.
Leading bowlers for Charter included Faith Tucker, who shot 257, 214, and 146. Cameron Thiele, Jasmine Chung, and Giovani Gurgel performed well, according to Mason.
The Coral Glades girls’ bowling team earned fourth place in the tournament. Coach Joe Catalano was proud of the team. “Everyone on the team did well, and we have a good team,” he said.
