Hundreds of South Florida residents attended a Juneteenth Celebration in Coral Springs at the Great Lawn of City Hall on June 18.
The event featured food trucks on-site and included activities for all ages such as a bounce house, arts and crafts, and lawn games.
Coral Springs Vice Mayor, Joshua Simmons, provided a welcome message and shared the history of Juneteenth with the crowd.
On-stage performances included live music by the band Remix, a dance performance by Innergy Dance Group, and step performances by members of local fraternities and sororities. DJ Jazzy Jeff also provided music and served as the event emcee.
Juneteenth Celebration had several corporate sponsors including Amazon, who sponsored an outdoor lounge, Baptist Health South Florida, who provided support for an activity area, and Miami Dolphins who sponsored inflatable games.
The event, which was free and open to the public, was organized by the City of Coral Springs Emergency Management and Events Department.
This initiative to establish Juneteenth as a city holiday, and to create this annual event, was spearheaded by Coral Springs’ first black Commissioner, now Vice Mayor, Joshua Simmons.
