Coral Springs commissioners made it clear Wednesday they do not support raising property taxes as they begin work on the city’s 2026-27 budget, even as officials warned of potential multimillion-dollar revenue losses tied to a proposed statewide property tax overhaul.
The proposed millage rate for 2026-27 is 6.3132, and the current millage rate is 6.0232. Everyone on the commission was unanimous in their opposition to raising the millage rate. They will set TRIM at a special meeting on Thursday, July 2, at 5:15 p.m. at City Hall.
If they don’t raise the millage rate, it will remain at 6.0232, according to Commissioner Shawn Cerra.
“We absolutely need to keep our millage rate the same so that we can show our support to our local businesses and homeowners while re-evaluating every aspect of our budget to find fiscal balance,” said Cerra.
During the meeting, City Manager Catherine Givens presented the challenges the city will face if voters approve reducing property taxes on homesteaded properties. She said the city could lose between $13 million and $14.5 million in 2028 and $26.8 million in 2029. These figures were provided by the property tax appraiser, according to Paula Rubiano, spokesperson for Coral Springs.
Givens said she wanted everyone in the city’s workforce to know they are valued and respected. She outlined several service areas that may be impacted if there were a loss of nearly $40 million in ad valorem tax over two years.
She also stressed other opportunities would be explored to help offset costs, including public-private partnerships, increased user fees, millage increases, naming rights, and revenue diversification, according to Rubiano.
