The Coral Springs Aquatic Center is in for a much-needed multimillion-dollar upgrade.
The city commission will consider awarding a $3,123,021 contract to Recreational Design and Construction, Inc., to improve the center’s pool deck. The money for the project will come from American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding and the capital budget.
Of that sum, $2,878.021 would go to the actual design, construction, and renovation-related costs, while another $245,000 is miscellaneous work. That money would cover unforeseen circumstances during construction and require city approval.
In September 2022, a consultant study confirmed the deck was shifting because of leaks in the dive well and water intrusion throughout the deck. The firm recommended mitigating the issue immediately to avoid further damage to the decks or competitive pools.
Subsequently, the city prepared and solicited a bid package, receiving one from Recreational Design and Construction. That company has worked on projects of a similar size and scope for Coral Springs and other municipalities throughout the state.
As of press time, there is no definitive date for when the Aquatic Center pools will close. But, according to the contract, work on the deck could last up to six months.
The Coral Springs Aquatic Center was originally built in 1996 with funding from a $3.2 million grant. Since then, the center has become a world-renowned facility, hosting competitions and being the training site for multiple Olympic Athletes, including Bruno Fratus and Dara Torres.
