Mia Hansen has a passion for teaching the latest technology to students at Park Springs Elementary School in Coral Springs.
A fifth-grade teacher, Hansen runs the Panther Bots, a robotics club with two teams. She was among a group of Broward public school teachers who spent four days learning about the latest VEX robotics technology at Pines Collegiate Academy 6–12.
“There is much interest in robotics at Park Springs, and we are planning to participate in competitions in the coming year,” said Hansen.
Students in the robotics club design, build, and then program VEX IQ robots using block coding. Eventually, they learn to program their robots to play games similar to soccer, where they get the robot to pick up a ball and place it into a goal.
“The students learn to solve problems and work together as a team,” said Hansen.
Craig Lehrhaupt, who teaches computers at Parkside Elementary School in Coral Springs, is working on expanding the robotics club. He runs one robotics team and has found that more students love to work with technology and learn coding skills.
“In the robotics club, our students have to learn to work together to build a robot and then program it. They are learning valuable skills,” said Lehrhaupt.
The teachers who serve as robotics coaches spent the week learning about VEX robotics and robotic games that will be used in student competitions during the 2025-2026 school year.
For a final activity, the coaches designed, built, and then drove their robots in a game played on a field that resembled a hockey rink.
