The J.P. Taravella High School boys’ and girls’ swim teams are improving and doing well in local meets.
The Trojans recently lost to a strong Marjory Stoneman Douglas team. Coach Candy Allen said the team is working hard and improving.
“I think our swimmers are doing well and will improve later in the season,” she said.
Victoria Sosa, a senior and a team captain for the girls’ team, loves swimming and has been active in the sport for ten years. She competes in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle.
“As a leader, I encourage and support everyone on the team. It is fun to be on the team, and I want to qualify for the regional and state meets,” she said.
Zane Samms, a senior and captain for the boys’ team, has been a member for four years. He swims the 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle, and 200 individual medley. “Being on the swim team is fun, and I want to uplift my teammates. I want to swim in college next year,” he said.
The Coral Glades High School boys’ and girls’ teams did well in a recent meet involving several teams. The boys defeated Plantation, Dillard, and Northeast. The girls defeated Northeast and Dillard by large margins and tied with Plantation.
Coach Mark Vanvoorhis is pleased with both teams. He said Ethan Persten is doing well in the freestyle, Galen Tortorella has performed well in the breaststroke, and Benjamin Denevi is doing well in the backstroke and butterfly. On the girls’ team, Amyrah Poitier is performing well in the butterfly and individual medley.
